I have been swooning over these great Mason Jar Lights at Pottery Barn:

Aren't they fun?
Unfortunately, there's no way I can afford them (not to mention that I just bought a new house and have all brand-new lighting fixtures), but that doesn't mean that I can't get the same look in my home!
All I did was take 5 Quart-Sized Bell Canning Jars and inverted them over my dining room chandelier. The jars sit on the candle bases as though they were MADE for this purpose!
The light sparkles through those canning jars just as pretty as any fancy crystal chandelier, too! The best part is, though, that when it gets dusty, all I have to do is run the jars through the dishwasher!
I know that many of you have a similar chandelier in your homes - it's a pretty basic model - so why not give this a try? When you get tired of the look, all you have to do is make some jam and fill your jars!
The Fake-It Yourself Breakdown:
Fake Pottery Barn Mason Jar Chandy (5 Jars, $0.00 - on hand)
Total Fake-It Cost: $0.00
Compare to PB's Exeter Line of Lighting ($149-399.00)
Total Fake-It Savings: $149-399.00

I've been swooning over those too and I do have that exact light fixture over my table! Thanks for the great idea. Do they feel pretty secure, I'd hate them to fall off and shatter. Also, did you use wide mouth or narrow mouth jars?
ReplyDeleteHi Debbie, Great questions! First, I used narrow mouth jars.
DeleteMy hubby asked the same question about them sliding off - they are pretty secure as there is a slight lip on the candle bases of my chandelier. If you are concerned, you could always use a little piece of double-sided tape around the mouth of the jars to secure them further.
Cheers!

DeleteWhat keeps the jars from falling to the side? In my house they would get bumped on occasion.

ReplyDeleteSorry - had a typo and it was driving me crazy!
ReplyDeleteOr you could use that candle stickum stuff they make to keep tapers from leaning in candlesticks. Love this idea! Can't wait to use it at a casual, country style wedding this summer.
My question would have been about securing the jars, but you've already addressed that issue. So, Heather, I have to say that this is one of the best ideas I've seen anywhere for using what you already have on hand (or can acquire inexpensively).
ReplyDeleteI love it and think it looks fantastic. Just wish I could do that with my ceiling fan lights, lol.
ReplyDeleteWOW! This is amazing!

Very artistic and sensible too! Using jars as your light shades is a great idea. Try using LED lights so that it would make your room brighter. The lights you used seem to be quite dim.

Hi! I have a question... I'm considering doing this exact same thing, but I'm concerned about the amount of heat that will be trapped inside the jars. What kind of bulbs did you use, and do they get extremely hot? Thanks :)
