I knew I wanted to make something like them...only problem is that I think these are really impractical for a family with children. I can just see myself scrubbing spaghetti sauce off of those shells!
At a yard sale, a few weeks back I came across these grody place mats, $0.50 for four:
Totally gross, I know...but look what a little Hydrangea craft paint mixed with a little water can do:
The Dollar Tree is selling these great little bowls of assorted shells:
I also had some of their Cobalt Blue Sea Glass leftover from another project, so out comes the glue gun for some seashore fun!
I left the bottoms of the place mats empty so they'd be more practical to actually use! Here they are in my Dining Room, bringing a bit of the Summer & Sea to my home:
One more time...BEFORE & AFTER
The Fake-It Yourself Breakdown:
Four Pottery Barn Inspired Place Mats (Mats $0.50, Shells & Glass $2.00)
Total Fake-It Cost: $2.50
Compare to Pottery Barn Shell Chargers (Sale! $21.00 each...Are they nuts???)
Total Fake-It Savings: $81.50
these are beautiful I love them!

Ok, you may want to smack me, but how do you stop the spaghetti sauce from getting on the shells (switch out the place-mats at dinner time?) I'm just responding from a messy person's point of view. :)
