Alma Mater Shirts

Have you been to the College Bookstore lately?  Do they not realize that students are POOR and cannot afford those awesome t-shirts and sweatshirts with their Alma Mater's name sewn on in cute calico fabrics?

What about us parents?  We want a "Whats-A-Matta U Mom" or a "Harvard Dad" Shirt, but we sure don't want to fork over the Harvard price for them!

OK!  OK!  The truth is that my son is only four years-old!  But, we send him to a very nice Private School and we'd really like to show our pride that he is lucky enough to attend!

Let's get started!  I picked up two t-shirts at a Michael's sale for $3.00 each.  I also picked up a large roll of Sewable Fusible Web to attach my pretty fabrics.

First, iron on the fusible web to the fabric.

Next, either using a stencil or free-hand, draw your letters backwards on the back of the fabric.  During this process, I discovered how handy being dyslexic can be!

Cut out the letters, peel off the paper backing of the fusible web, and iron them onto your shirt.

Next, pull out that old sewing machine and dust it off!  Time to fire it up and sew a close zigzag stitch all around the edges of your letters using a contrasting thread.

...and here they are!  Custom-made Alma Mater T-Shirts!

If your "baby" is in pre-school or college, you can whip these up to show your pride and support.  Just beware...all of the other parents are going to want one too!

Fake-It Yourself Breakdown:

  1. LOL. I guess Disney's marketing is effective, since the first thing I thought of when I saw the post title was the Tow Mater truck from Cars! LOL

    Cute shirts, tho. :)

  2. It can be a pretty fun (and cheap) project. For one thing, you might not need to buy shirts if you have plain old shirts lying around. That's one more way to save cash!
