Potting Bench Into General Store

This is where I used to do my blogging.  It was once a teak potting bench.  It sat outside of my house for a few seasons before I decided to give it another use as my desk.

Well, it wasn't really "doing it" for me anymore.  Too dark.  Kinda dirty.  OK...filthy.  Time for a change!

So I tried a White Wash treatment - one part white paint + one part water = looks fine going on, but not so good 10 minutes later when the teak stain starts seeping through.

A gooey yellow mess!

Enter this rather desperate solution - Clear Polyurethane + Wysteria Blue Craft Paint:

The bluish-purple color countered the yellow stain seeping through and the polyurethane stopped any more seepage from happening.  It also gave the bench a weathered, beachy look.  Thank goodness!

After a good scrubbing, the metal counter top came up to a high shine, and it was all ready for it's new life as a Mini General Store in my new kitchen!

Is it possible for a piece of furniture to be happy?  I sure think this one is!

  4. A coat of blue paint and some scrubbing. Voila, it's a thing of beauty. Nice job, Heather.

  5. We LOVE your brownie recipe. It seriously is close enough to Betty Crocker that I've kept an empty BC box, with those little velcro circle stickers so I can reopen the top of the box and reuse it, with a ziploc bag inside with YOUR dry recipe and the instructions written on it. Haha.

Question: I'm looking for a fake-it-wheat thins recipe. I just tried one tonight from http://kitchensimplicity.com/homemade-wheat-thins/ but was not impressed. Not sure paprika was the right ingredient to make them work. (Other than taste, though, look and shape and texture was all perfect)

Also, after having discovered your site, I've wondered about more "fake-it" recipes, and now that my dishwasher rinse aid just ran out tonight, was wondering what it's made of. . . do you have a fake-it recipe for making that?

    1. Ps--your re-purposed desk looks amazing, so wonderfully vintage-y country. I think about doing things like this, but you actually do them!
