If left to his own devices, he'd be at McDonald's every morning getting his Bacon, Egg & Cheese Bagel plus a hash brown and (truth be told) probably a sausage biscuit on the side! Not very healthy on his body or his wallet! We've come up with a compromise that's both delicious and frugal. Now isn't that what love is all about?
Every week, you'll find me taking 10 Minutes out of my day to assemble his weekly supply of Fake McDonald's Bacon, Egg & Cheese Bagel Sandwiches. Yup....I sacrifice a whole 10 Minutes to do this for him. Hope he appreciates it!
Here we go! Grab Bagels, Eggs, Cheese Slices and Pre-Cooked Bacon.
It's much more efficient if I gather everything I need at once.
I lay it all down on the counter and make an assembly line.
I fry two eggs at once in the pan to further increase efficiency.
Let them cool for just a minute on the counter.
All assembled and ready for the bags!
That's it! Pop them in the freezer and they're ready to grab one at a time for the rest of the week! All Hubby has to do is wrap one in a paper towel and heat it in the microwave for about 90 seconds (every microwave is a little different, so you'll have to experiment with yours to see what's best)! They'll last for about a month in a freezer bag.
Now let's do the Fake-It Yourself Breakdown!
Bagels $1.49, Eggs $0.67, Bacon $2.19, Cheese $.72
Total Fake-It Cost $5.07 or $0.85 Each
6 Real McDonald's Bacon, Egg & Cheese Bagels, $2.10 Each
Total Fake-It Yourself Savings $7.53*
*That may not sound like much, but consider the savings over the course of a year, 6 bagels a week, and it comes to a savings of $390.00. Taking it a step further, if he went to McDonald's and was tempted by that hash brown and extra sausage biscuit, his yearly expenditure would be $1279.20 (yikes!), therefore giving us a savings of $1014.00 by "faking" McDonald's. Definitely worth the 10 Minute effort!
U rock & I am POSITIVE hubby appreciates this!! What man, in love, wouldn't?!? ;-)
ReplyDeleteI love this. For more efficiency, trying baking all the eggs, scrambled, in a 9x13 pan, then cutting into squares to divide among the sandwiches. My family loves them. (new to your site, and love it so far!) I think we are kindred spirits (in frugality) :)
ReplyDeleteLinda D.
Great idea, Linda! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteTo make it a true fake-out you need the butter spread on the bagel. It wouldn't add a lot to your cost.
ReplyDeleteours are 3.50 here. They do put breakfast sauce on them whatever it is but I opt out..
ReplyDeleteI made this using venison sausage which was super good. My husband and I provide the family with meat by hunting which saves a lot! I also used a "sandwich bagel" which is flatter and my hubbie likes those better. props to you for this!
ReplyDeletewhat cheese do you use?
ReplyDeleteI just use cheese singles from Aldi (see in first photo). My husband likes the swiss flavored cheese slices.
ReplyDeletebagel sauce???
ReplyDeleteYum! My husband love breakfast sandwiches too. This will really cut down on fast food costs!
ReplyDeleteif you want a nice "zing" try Trader Joes shredded pepper jack. mmmmm!
ReplyDeleteBagels $1.49, Eggs $0.67, Bacon $2.19, Cheese $.72
ReplyDeletewhere the heck do you shop????
Only at Aldi!
DeleteAnd those would be for quantities of 6!
DeleteJust made this for myself! Feels awesome knowing I have my breakfast for the next six days already made!!!!
ReplyDeleteoh! and since I love cream cheese on EVERYTHING, I added some to the bottom part of the bagel. Can't wait to have one tomorrow morning!!
DeleteOMG!!! I used to work at Dunkin donuts and I would add chive cream cheese to the bottom of my bagel sandwiches! Yum!
DeleteYou can make your own sauce for the bagels using 2 T. Mayonnaise and 1 tsp. Dill Mustard.
ReplyDeleteI make these for my husband and he loves them! You can also save lots of money and make breakfast burrito's. Just like the bagel sandwiches, you can make them in bulk and freeze them and just pull them out one or two at a time!
ReplyDeleteWe love making these. Thanks for the tip on the dressing and since Im awful at frying eggs, thanks for the tip on baking the eggs (do i mix it w/ milk or just scramble the eggs and bake in the 9x13)?
ReplyDeleteAnd for the jerkface 'anonymous' posting rude comments: if you don't want to appreciate good, wholesome family blogging about ways to save, stop reading it! We love and appreciate her!
What about the cost of labor? Does that make it worth it?

When we are making breakfast sandwiches for an early morning road trip....we have 8 in our family, so we open one egg into each muffin tin place. Break the yoke (so its more like McDonald's) and bake at 350 for 10 mins. My kids love these breakfast goodies...makes the early morning a little bit easier! Don't forget to spray the muffin tin with veggie spray so it will come right out when you are ready for it.
ReplyDeleteIts hollandaise sauce
ReplyDeleteDefinitely hollandaise. People keep saying it's mayo and dill mustard bit that is for the steak sandwich.
