If your New Year's resolution this year is to "Save Money," consider altering that thinking into a resolution of being "More Self-Reliant." After all, nothing says being frugal like Doing It Yourself.
I recently came across this fantastic article about "
50 Things Everyone Should Know How To Do" over at
Marc and Angel Hack Life. Now, I consider myself to be pretty self-reliant, but I found that there were quite a few things on the list that I have no clue how to do myself - like
Changing a Tire,
Jump-starting a Car, or
Remembering People's Names (
I'm terrible at that!).
There are tons of resources embedded in the list that will point you in the right direction if you were wanting to, say,
Learn CPR,
Speak a Second Language,
Handle a Job Interview,
Select Good Produce or
Start a Fire Without Matches.
I think I'm going to be frequenting this
list as well as the
Marc & Angel Hack Life blog as a check on myself when I'm feeling like I have a handle on everything...there's always more to learn and ways to be better! It's kind of like the
BIG List of Ideas That Motivates Me that I check in on when I'm feeling that
Frugal Frump!
So, next time you find yourself wanting to call in the "professionals," take a moment to consider a way to do it yourself. Like my husband always says, "I can't break it any worse than it already is!" Right??

ReplyDeleteSince my hubby works 24-hr shifts, I have to do a lot of stuff on my own. I love it! It makes me feel so powerful and able! I still have more to learn, but I'm getting there!
ReplyDeleteI think that basic sewing skills are a must for being self-reliant. You can save money and time by being able to make clothing repairs and you can repurpose fabrics for new uses.
ReplyDeleteI think two skills that can make a huge difference is knowing how to garden and then preserving food. This can help cut your food budget.
