1 Cup Sugar
1/2 Cup Flour
1/3 Cup Cocoa
1/4 teaspoon Salt
1/4 teaspoon Baking Powder
Mix all these ingredients together with a whisk and dump them into a zipper bag. On the bag, add the following instructions:
Add: 2 Eggs, 1/2 Cup Vegetable Oil, 1 teaspoon Vanilla. Bake @ 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes in a 9 x 9 pan.
That's it! Super easy, right? I made up 3 mixes in less than 5 minutes. These should stay fresh in your pantry for at least 6 months. To extend the freshness, store in your freezer for up to a year.
*To customize your mixes, add milk or dark chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, walnuts, or what ever kinds of add-ins you like in your brownies!

this will NOT help my diet plan.... but perhaps in a Mason jar with a pretty lid and card stock label it will make great gifts for the gift closet.
ReplyDeleteLove that idea!
DeleteIf you mix it with a can of black beans it is delicious. Just rinsed the black beans and refill the can up with the beans and water. Blend in a blender and mix with the above dry ingredients, you will avoid oil eggs and anything else the box states you should mix with it. Its a yummy full of fibre treat! Bake at 350 for 30 min. I add walnuts and sometimes chocolate chips.
DeleteSo what's the measure on how many black beans to put in exactly?
DeleteMrs H, I so love your idea!
DeleteWhat size pan is best to use for this mix? Thanks -Erin
ReplyDeleteI used a 9 x 9 pan. Just right! Cheers!
DeleteMaybe I didn't do something right...but it only made enough for a small small pan.
DeleteIt said a 9x9 inch pan..be sure to spray the pan with Pam..Most cakes do usually make a 9 x 13 cake..However, looks like this is the right amt..Just a smaller amount..even and 8 x 8 pan.. Good luck!!
DeleteWhen you make a cake, yes, you use a 9 x 13, but brownie mix usually calls for a 9 x 9 inch pan, just like it says. I'm going to give this a try today.
DeleteMaybe I just overlooked this but is this a 9 x 13 size?
ReplyDeleteI used a 9 x 9 square pan. Cheers!
DeleteThanks!!
DeleteHas anyone used this recipe for the 9 x 13? The Betty Crocker box says Family Size 9 x 13. When I buy the box mix, I usually add 2 eggs, etc (same as your recipe). I suppose I could try it and see what happens!
DeleteI just made these about an hour ago in a 9x13 pan and they came out really thin and crunchy. The taste was great though, so I will definitely make these again but in the 9x9 pan!
DeleteI doubled the recipe and then reduced the eggs by one and reduced the cup of oil by 1/4 and added 1/4 cup water, then I cooked in a 13 by 9 inch pan. Baked around the same amount of time. Great!
DeleteI have recently found the fascination of making my cake/brownie mixes with a can of soda instead of the oil/eggs/water. They turn out great, just a little longer cooking time. Does the soda work for this mix as well?
ReplyDeleteWOW! Never heard of that, what kind of soda? does it taste good enough? Im so curious!
DeleteI've never tried that with brownies, but I have used a can of soda with a cake mix to make cupcakes (used diet Mountain Dew with lemon cake). The batter made a spongier cake than oil/water/eggs does, but they were still delicious (and like an eighth as fattening!). I like substituting yogurt for oil too :)
DeleteI doubled this recipe and made it with 1 can of diet coke (in place of the eggs oil) in a 13x9 pan
DeleteAshley - Do you drain and rinse the beans before pureeing them?
DeleteAnother great substitute for oil in boxed mix recipes is applesauce. Just found this recipe through pinterest and can't wait to try it. Thanks so much for the recipe, Heather!
Deletei've had them made with a can of pureed pumpkin (not pie mix) substituted for the oil, egg and water. they were very good. no clue they were "on the healthy side". =)
DeleteYou need to keep the liquid with the beans. I threw everything in my food processor and they came out SO fudgy!
Deleteinstead of oil, i always use applesauce. i buy those snack applesauce cups and throw the whole thing in when it calls for 1/3 oil. It helps makes the mix lower in fat.
DeleteI like the idea of using black beans in place of water, oil, and egg. Do you use a full can for this 8x8-size recipe? or for a 9x13-size recipe?
DeleteOK, well I just made this recipe using pureed black beans instead of oil and eggs. Not good at all. Doesn't taste chocolatey at all. Doesn't taste beany either. Just weird. So I wouldn't recommend using a can of beans for this small of a recipe. May be OK for a 9x13 recipe.
DeleteAnd the texture is not cakey, but not fudgey either. Just weird...Dense, almost rubbery. Didn't rise at all. Maybe I overmixed?....I just put everything in the food processor after I pureed the beans and mixed it in there....like sarahlucindaclark said she did.
I'll try this recipe again, but definitely not with the beans. Bummer. I was really hoping I could sneak those beans in for my family.
Maybe you used too much? The bean amount should be cup for cup of the oil or other fat. I never use beans in place of the egg. Maybe that's why they didn't come out. You can use ground flax or chia as an egg substitution.
DeleteI'll have to try these o ut...that is our favorite brownie mix...and believe me when I say my husband is particular.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to try it out!!
This is my husband EXACTLY. Nothing compares to Betty Crocker's Fudge Brownies. His favorite by far. I'm going to try these tonight. Did they pass the test at your house Melissa?
DeleteThank you! Can't wait to try these! ♥
ReplyDeleteOMG so easy and what a huge money savings. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteBrownies, are always in demand at my house! Thanks for the great recipe!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Susie

Oh, this is dangerous for me. It's too easy to make and cheap!! Thanks for sharing this and all of your other easy tips. I've pinned a couple...loved the Fake Febreeze! Trying that this week!
ReplyDeleteMaybe its just me but isn't Cocoa kinda spendy I get the brownie mixes on sale for $1. I love the idea and think they would make cute gifts! But I thought the Cocoa was more expensive than the mix?!
ReplyDeleteI make these for $0.30 each which includes the cost of the cocoa.
Deletewhere do you buy your cocoa then?
DeleteAldi!
DeleteCheck with your local bakery supply store. You can get bulk cocoa powder for cheap. Or try WINCO or FOOD FOR LESS who have it in bulk bins. Even if you buy it off the shelf, it's still cheaper to make the mix from scratch.
DeleteWhen you BREAK DOWN the cost of the ONE BATCH, yes, it is MUCH cheaper than buying a boxed mix. Purchasing all the ingredients initially will cost more, but you will get quite a few batches from it.
DeleteI LOVED the way these turned out and my family RAVED about them!
Love this - best part is no partially hydrogenated oils and you can be totally extravagant with the cocoa.
ReplyDeleteJust made these and LOVED them. My fam would certainly have not been able to tell the difference!
ReplyDeleteThanks!!
These will make great gifts, too! Thanks so much for sharing. Question, though...is there supposed to be water added? The boxed mix requires water.
ReplyDeleteIt tasted good but was kind of dry. Maybe you need extra large eggs? Usually there is a variation for cake like brownies and I wondered if I could add another egg and it would work ok. I think next time I will try that. I think I will also do half brown and half regular sugar.
ReplyDeleteBrown sugar will weigh them down, making them drier, and too crunchy. Stick with the granulated sugar.
DeleteI made these today to try out on my picky son. I had one, and yes, it was good. I went to town, and when I came home, they were GONE! I guess they passed the test! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThey are in the oven...can't wait!
ReplyDeleteDelicious! I added choc. chips and pecans to the mix. Family loved them. Don't think I'll ever use a mix again!
ReplyDeleteGuys, for a 13x9 pan, just double the recipe :)
ReplyDeleteThat's what I was wondering. :) Thanks!
DeleteThese were delicious, thank you!! Next time I'll double batch them so we have some left over!!! :-)
ReplyDeleteOh what a wonderful idea! This year we have been trying to save a bit of money each month to do more for Operation Christmas Child but I don't want my family to skimp out... sometimes time becomes an issue so this and the cookie mixes are PERFECT. Thank you and God bless. klamathocc.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteOperation Christmas Child is a great idea but to say you don't want your children to lose out...well isn't that the idea? To sacrifice for others? Just thinking....
DeleteThank you so much for this recipe!! Its awsome! Do you have Betty Crocker Cake Mixes? you gave us the brownie and cookie recipes, please give us the cake recipes! Love your BLOG!
ReplyDeleteBrill!
ReplyDeleteDon't suppose you have the Devil's Food Cake Mix??
Brownies in the oven NOW!
ReplyDeleteI love your blog! We have decided that it would be best for my to stay home with my children. And you blog has helped us be able to do that.
ReplyDeletecould you make these gluten free?
ReplyDeleteHow many cups is the mix? I wanted to make it and store it.
ReplyDeleteYes, I would definitely be interested the cake mix also.
ReplyDeleteCould you just use self rising flour and leave out the salt and baking soda?
ReplyDeleteYum! Could you swap out the veggie oil for apple sauce? I have done it with muffins but not brownies. Hmmm...
ReplyDeleteI've also used applesauce instead of oil. I tried it with brownies and the brownies seemed to come out more cake-like & I thought it altered the taste a bit.
DeleteI made this tonight but I modified it a bit. I used 1/2 cup of cocoa, and added a 1/4 cup of chocolate syrup. So rich and yummy.
ReplyDeleteHmmm- Kinda dry and plain. I buy family size brownie mix for $1 and it makes a 9x13. I wish I would have tried it before making several batches.
ReplyDeletedry... sounds like you baked them too long. with brownies i always pull them on the early side. and always add chocolate chips or chunks.
DeleteI am in love with this recipe. I made it last night after finding it on pinterest and my family preferred it over the boxed type of brownies. The super savings are wonderful, specially when making them for bake sales! I will be making the chocolate chip cookies next!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!!
Oh. No. I just made these. And I've eaten too many. I baked them 15 min in a 9 inch round cake pan, and I added about 1/2 cup chocolate chunks. Perfect!!
ReplyDeleteI forgot to say that I used 1 egg, not 2. And I used less than 1/2 cup oil, just topped off the measuring cup with water. And I greased the pan. :)
DeleteMy 10-year-old tried this recipe this morning and we've been feasting on brownies all day! Fantastic recipe. Thanks for posting. Do you have any recipes for muffin mixes?
ReplyDeleteA little scary, but I'm gonna try it with the black beans & see if it works! Great ideas!
ReplyDeletewondering if i could substitue reg flour with gluten free flour?
ReplyDeleteI came here by way of Pinterest this morning. My brownies are cooling off right now. I'm interested in trying soda in place of the oil too. I have several cans of tea which I thought my guys would drink. Turns out it wasn't really tea but sparkling soda tea & they won't drink it.
ReplyDeletethanks for posting the recipe!
My girls are allergic to eggs so I used the bean idea with great results! So fudgy
ReplyDeleteHaven't used this recipe yet but will try. I cook my boxed brownies in the microwave, you don't have to use all the oil and the brownies are soft and are usually done in 5min
ReplyDeleteJust curious... I just whipped up a triple batch of this.. but in the same bowl... now I'm not sure how much each batch should be. Do you know how much mix each one should be? figured it would be easier to ask instead of sit there with 3 measuring cups (which i don't have) and try and make them all even... help! :)
ReplyDeleteLindsey,
DeleteI'm sorry to say, but I don't know. This recipe is meant to be done separately - that way you can be sure that the exact amounts are in each bag. Maybe put the whole thing in one large bag and make a big old batch of brownies later?
I made several batches of this yesterday and it is just about 2 cups per batch. Hope that helps!
Deletejust add all the ingredient totals (on paper) and divide by 3
DeleteMade these today and took the suggestion of using 1/2 cup cocoa powder and 1/4 cup chocolate syrup. I used an 8x8 pan and they were still a bit thin. Baked for 30 minutes and they were delicious!
ReplyDeleteThank you for this!! I featured you on my post about Pinterest inspired make-ahead mixes:
ReplyDeletehttp://chrystal-lewis.blogspot.com/2012/08/see-it-pin-it-do-it-make-ahead-mixes.html
These are so delicious! I always believed that brownies from scratch could never be as good as box brownies... but these are DEFINITELY just as good! My husband and I both loved them and ate the whole pan in less than 24 hours... oops. :)
ReplyDeletethese are really the best brownies ever. I have always thought that homeade brownies were too bland and had a weird texture but this completely changed everything. my family has already eaten two batches in the past twelve hours and it litereally has cost me nothing:)
ReplyDeleteMade these last night and they turned out very grainy. Too much sugar perhaps? More flour?
ReplyDeletei had a similar issue! the taste is so close to bc (the only kind of brownies i actually like. i've never had delicious home made ones), but mine came out very grainy/crystalline. i did use organic raw sugar. maybe some way of dissolving some of the sugar before pouring? i saw some recommendations for using some water in place of some oil, perhaps the sugar could go in the water to dissolve? i am *not* a baker, so my ideas could be way off.
DeleteYou could leave out the sugar of the dry mix, and when you are ready to prepare the brownies just add it to the eggs and butter/oil in a pan on the stove top till it's melted, then add the rest of the dry mix. Then the sugar will dissolve.

DeleteAbsolutely delicious! I came across this recipe on Pinterest the other day and immediately made the mix. I baked the brownies tonight and my family of 4 just ate the whole pan! The only addition that I made to the basic mix was to add 1/2 cup of mini chocolate chips. For real...these were the best brownies that I have ever made. My husband said..."the only thing missing is some ice cream"--lol. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteWow this is fantastic and a great money saver. I love all the substitutions people have been making. The person that suggested using pureed black beans is so right about it tasting amazing. People always comment on them but would never guess that there are beans in them. Perfect swap for the kids too. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteCute idea but it cracks me up that people are thinking of this as a "mix". It is just making brownies from scratch! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat recipe! I featured it today on my blog:
ReplyDeletehttp://fastcheapandgood.blogspot.com/2012/08/sustainable-pin-brownie-mix.html
At least I can pronounce these ingredients! Have you ever read the ones on the mix boxes? My motto is if I can't pronounce it, I don't plan on feeding it to my family.
ReplyDeleteI tried this yesterday and am considering given mixes with homemade vanilla as Christmas gifts. (Yes, we're on a big-time budget!) Because I don't have an 8x8 pan, I multiplied the recipe by 1.5, and it turned out perfectly. It is a little fudgier (is that a word?) than the BC box mix, but much better than the homemade brownies I've attempted in the past. I always use applesauce instead of oil, and that worked well with this. I made up a second mix with wheat flour and raw sugar; we'll see how that worked out next week. I'm also thinking about adding in some grated zucchini--gotta be sneaky with my fam!
ReplyDeleteWe did a taste test at our work potluck! No one knew these were homemade! Thank you SO much!!
ReplyDeletebeing "old" - this makes me laugh, in a good way, since the tag line used to be..No one knew they were from a box... love it and glad to know they were so good...and inexpensive
DeleteMade these using freshly ground whole wheat flour and raw sugar. Also threw in some chocolate chips and some peanut butter chips. Other than coming out a little grainy (probably due to the ww), they were FABULOUS! I always have these ingredients on hand, and am so glad I can make brownies without the box mix. Thanks for sharing!

ReplyDeleteThese brownies are perfect! I enjoy your blog!I gave you a shout out on my blog, follow me at manemade.blogspot.com thanks!
ReplyDeleteIn the oven as we speak....we shall see...we are both picky about our brownies :)
ReplyDeleteHad anyone made these with unsweetened cocoa powder?
ReplyDeleteThat's what the recipe calls for and yes, it works.
DeleteThis is such an amazing idea! I love it! Especially with small kids who love love love brownies! Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteThey are in my oven. I added fresh mint to mine. Can't wait.
ReplyDeleteThese were as good as the mix! They were delicious!!
ReplyDeleteI am high altitude. I'm going to try these adding the extra flour suggested on a regular mix and adjusting the oil and water as also suggested. Hope it works! I'd love a lower cost, good tasting brownie!
ReplyDeleteThis post gives the light in which we can observe the reality. This is very nice one and gives indepth information. Thanks for sharing this nice article. escrowit
ReplyDeletethis brownie mix is amazing!!! my family loves it, but I can't make them to where they don't fall apart because they are so moist. HELP!!!
ReplyDeletehihi,
ReplyDeletei am using the same betty crocker mix but i am thinking how to make it less sweet. any suggestions??
Do you think I could use hot cocoa mix instead of regular cocoa? :)
ReplyDeleteDo you think I could use hot cocoa mix instead of regular cocoa? :)
ReplyDeleteI doubt it. Cocoa mix has sugar, dry milk, etc., that would duplicate ingredients you're already using. I have a recipe for brownies that I've used all my life, but I will try this tomorrow. Can't wait!
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteIs this recipe good for high altitude areas? I made this according to the recipe and they were so oily they didn't even firm up. It was just a bubbly, oily, soupy mess when I took it out of the oven! I'm rather sad....I was really hoping these would turn out! :( help!
ReplyDeleteHad to try this before I committed to a zillion bags filling my cupboards (did someone say brownies???), like when I found the brilliant 123 cake. Blech. A year down the road, 3 containers of cake mix finally got tossed because they were just gross.
ReplyDeleteThese though, these are zillion bag worthy. These are yummy brownies. I stirred chocolate chips and pecans into mine, and put caramel on top that was leftover from our christmas baking. I like being able to have this in my cupboard for a quick dessert instead of the boxed mixes filled with preservatives and who knows what. Yay!
I tried these, but instead of regular cocoa powder and sugar I substituted ChocoVivo Mayan Tradition - it's cocoa powder, raw sugar, chiles and a touch of cinnamon. Excellente para la dia de los tres reyes next week - but I will have to make another batch!

ReplyDeleteWithout reading all the comments, what size pan, if you have to do anything special to make this into a 9x13 mix, why doesn't the blog owner go up and fix this post? Thank you.
ReplyDeleteIt's a 9 x 9 pan and the post has been fixed.

ReplyDeleteExcellent tasting & economic recipe...thanks for posting it. I think some comments reflect that readers are confused about what kind of cocoa to use. I'm not much of a cook and I followed your directions and did not have any trouble at all. Maybe the following will help those who don't know all cocoas are not the same.
ReplyDeleteBaking cocoa has no sweetener in it. It's extremely bitter. Chocolate cocoa is generally in a mix and already has sugar and the like. It's meant for drinking and not baking. Also Baking chocolate has more of the cocoa fat in it. Drinking cocoa has been processed to remove much of the fat. Hope this helps.
Fantastic thank you so much for this amazing recipe!!! I have added this to my blog. Please check it out on: http://www.nzecochick.com/2013/02/cheats-fudge-brownies.html
ReplyDeleteThanks M xx
I made these in a muffin tin.. the 12 count one. I baked for 20 mins. I also added Reeses pieces.. mmmm I will never buy boxed mix again.
ReplyDeleteI've made these a bunch of times and they are so yummy! I usually end up making two giant pans and freezing one in good size portions to take to work. I'll have to try to the muffin tin idea!
ReplyDeleteI've made these a few times and I'll have to say, they are awesome! I will never buy boxed again! Thanks for this great and easy recipe!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much. Love your website . I have been using your Febreeze recipe for a while now . Brownies are in the oven, I know they will be great !
ReplyDeleteIs there a way to "pin" this recipe? I see an icon for Facebook, twitter, etc., but I'm new to Pinterest and would like to "pin" this recipe. Thanks.
ReplyDeletepinterest offers plugins for different browsers. with this you can pin pretty much EVERYTHING! :D
DeleteWonderful recipe! I always double it and bake in a 9x13 pan. Do you think you could use stevia in place of sugar?
ReplyDeleteI just made this recipe today using white whole wheat flour and it's amazing!!!! Thanks so much for posting. By the way is there a way to decrease the sugar and not harm the sweetness of the brownie?
ReplyDeletei cut it to 1/2 cup and they seemed fine to us.
DeleteLOVE these! They are so much better than regular mixes when you add your own touch (chocolate chips, syrup, etc). I had always wondered why people would do brownies from scratch when mixes were so cheap but, in my area, they have not gone on sale in ages. No worries now...this is my go to recipe every time! Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteOMG so glad I came across your blog great frugal ideas. Check out my Frugal Friday post at www.iamcurlylocks.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know if tapioca flour could be substituted? I'm trying to find good recipes for my brother who has a wheat intolerance...
ReplyDeleteAre these for the "fudge like" or "cake like" brownies?
ReplyDeleteJust made this. I doubled ALL ingredients and added 1/2 bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips for a 9 x 13 baking dish. Turned out awsome! Thank's for sharing this!
ReplyDeleteOkay, so I've made so many brownie recipes from scratch. This one actually tastes like the brownies from a box--aka really good. I'm so glad I decided to try this super easy recipe out!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love your blog. Thank you so much for all of the helpful information you provide for everyone.
ReplyDeleteI tried your brownies today, and had 2 right off the bat. Wow ... they were delicious! I called my son and told him I had made homemade brownies, and within minutes he and my grandson were walking through the back door (they live behind us). I walked into the kitchen and my grandson had mouthful of brownie and one in each hand! ha! I cut up the rest of the brownies and sent them home for the rest of their family to enjoy. They were thrilled! :) I'm wishing, however, that I'd put back a couple for myself. They were fantastic and I will definitely be making them again! Thanks for the terrific recipe!
:-) I've been doing cookie, bar, and cake recipes like this for decades. ... Tip: Add 2 Tbsp. of chocolate syrup to the recipe when mixing. Richer chocolate flavor. Bake 18 minutes. This recipe is good for 8x8 -9x9 baking pan.

ReplyDeleteTo me these did not taste like the box kind... these were dry and cake-y, not fudgy. If a 9 x 13 takes two eggs, I should have only put one egg in these... eggs make them dry and cakey. Might try it again w/only one egg.
ReplyDeleteI have seen people using soda as the primary liquid in these, anyone tried using Guinness? I have had Guinness chocolate cake before and it was amazing. I am wondering if it would go well here.
ReplyDeleteAwesome ideas thanks for making my life easier. Great for the kids to make only have to grab wet ingredients and no messy spills to clan up.
ReplyDeleteI love your mix!! I use powdered eggs in the mix for even more convenience. 1T powder =1 egg

ReplyDeleteCan you substitute Splenda for Baking in place of the sugar?
ReplyDeleteprobably. but they will be more cake like.
DeleteThank you so much for this recipe! We live in Tokyo where a box of Betty Crocker brownies cost over $7! I can't wait to bring these brownies to church.
ReplyDeleteWow! Seven dollars? We would have to pass on those and find another way as well. I'm glad the recipe works for you, and I hope they are a big hit at church.
DeleteMy daughter just made these ... AMAZING!! She used Zulka (sugar) and dark cocoa. These are the best homemade brownies ever!
ReplyDeleteI totally love these!!! Im an American living in Germany and they unfortunately don't sell ready-made brownie mix. I am in love with these brownies, they always turn out perfect. I have my own food blog, I've created a spin-off of these brownies and gave you a shout-out in my blog post!
ReplyDeletethey do sell brownie mixes, but they are by far not as good as this one. plus they are way too expensive if you buy them ready made.
DeleteOk i read thru the comments nd didnt see this question.. How long will this mix last, especially if given as gifts?
ReplyDeleteusually lasts 6 months. if it's stored in the freezer up to 12 months.
DeleteI just made three of these mixes- two to store in Ziplocs and one that I cooked. The one that I cooked today- I added one cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips to and I cooked it in a 13x9 at 350 degrees for 18 minutes and it came out perfect.
ReplyDeleteI've made these several times and they are awesome!!!! Today I'm gonna try adding instant espresso :)
ReplyDeleteThanks. I've been meaning to make some of these up for some time now. Headed to the kitchen now!!

Question my brownies came out suuuper oily no idea why help!
ReplyDeletewe've had the problem when we doubled the ingredients. our solution: only 3 eggs and 3/4cup of oil instead of 4 eggs and 1 cup for double the amount of sugar, flour etc.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteOur very favorite brownie mix. i've used coconut oil the other day instead of vegetable oil and usually use home made vanilla sugar. anyhow the coconut oil brownies came out even better than the regular ones.
ReplyDeleteso easy and quickly made. Thank you!
my new fave!!! instead of vanilla extract, I use almond extract. gives it a super yummy, cherry type of flavor.
ReplyDeleteThe Betty Crocker Brownie Mix directions also lists 1/4 cup water in addition to the eggs and vegetable oil.
ReplyDeleteI made these tonight. I doubled the recipe, added 1/2 C. chopped pecans and baked them in a 9X13 pyrex pan for about 30 minutes. Once they were out of the oven I poured about a half cup of semi sweet chocolate chips on top and allowed them to melt. Then I spread the melted chips over the warm brownies. Easy Peasy frosted brownies and I saved money too. Thanks for sharing this recipe. I even made another bag to put in the cabinet for another day. I just love saving money!
ReplyDeleteTo keep this as a complimentary and frugal tip only comment I want to say I love your ideas and have used all of your recipes - brownie mix, cookie mix AND corn muffin mix. My tip (NOT a complaint) would be that you didn't factor in the cost of the name brand Ziplock bags pictured in your photos. They can get quite pricey in my area. Depending on how much they are per bag the Jiffy corn muffin mix may come out to be a wash (I can get them on sale sometimes for .50 and if I have a coupon, BAM!)... I have remedied this extra cost by storing the mixes in reusable (and more environment friendly) mason jars. I already had them but even if I didn't they would have paid for themselves rather quickly as I bake ALOT. I don't know if any of the other posters have commented on this or not, needless to say I'm lazy - hence wanting to use premade mixes instead of baking from scratch every time ;) Thanks so much for the recipes!
ReplyDeleteI'm planning on making this mix to give as gifts this Christmas so I tried it out myself to see how it tasted. It was REALLY yummy! I thought the recipe was perfect so I just wanted to say thanks for this! I'll come back in a week or so and leave a link when I create a blog post to show how I'm gifting the bags of mix. :o) Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteLooks super easy to make these. Why on Earth would you people usea can of soda? You are defeating the purpose of not use the store brand laden with unknown ingredients. Soda has a huge amount of unknown bad ingredients plus it's bad for your health. There's a way to use bananas instead of oil and eggs but I don't remember the amount. If interested do some research and you could probably find it.
ReplyDeletemade these tonight....doubled the recipe and made them in a 13x9 glass pan. I added about 1/2 cup semi-sweet morsels....DELICIOUS! Big hit! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI guess I needed to read the comments before using this recipe! I thought a brownit mix is for a 9x13" pan just like it says in the picture up top. I already have it in the oven. Oh well... next time and hopefully I remember to double the recipe! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI used butter instead of vegetable oil. There was not enough batter for even an 8x8 pan but because I read the reviews, I kept my eye on it so as not to overbake. However, these are more cakey and less fudgey than we'd like.

Sorry I can't help myself, but is this fake fake brownie mix? Boxed brownie/cake mixes are not the real thing! I don't even think the Betty Crocker brownie mix has cocoa in it. This is a great recipe for real brownies that are delicious!
ReplyDeleteHi! My name is Eva-Maria and I live in Germany. My parents lived 3 years in the USA and loved the fudge brownie mix from betty crocker. My Brother and I are loving it still. But in germany you can the mix only get from internetshops for much money. I have made this recipe this morning. Omg. They are tasting so fantastic! Thank you very much!
ReplyDeleteI have an egg and nut and peanut and seed allergy so most purees, soy and eggs of course are out. If using soda, what soda works best and do I just use soda or do I need soda and oil and water?
ReplyDeleteThanks
Has anyone made this in a jelly roll (full sheet cake) size? Also, where did things settle for the high altitude adjustments?
ReplyDeleteI have a quuestion about the sugar. Do you use caster or granulated. I tried with granulated and my brownies were crunchy and not in a good way
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! I recently moved to Sweden and we do not have "brownies" as we did in the states. You can get boxes of mix from the American store in Stockholm, but it will cost you over $7 per box!!! This is perfect. Simple, easy to store and my kids can pull out a baggie and make them by themselves! Thanks so much!!!

2nd time that I've tried this recipe. Both times these were crunchy around the edges but so gooey in the middle that I had a hard time scooping them out - had to eat them with a spoon. Way too sugury tasting for me, sorry... I'm probably just doing something wrong. :(

Since finding this recipe years ago, I always use it to make brownies. They're super good. I always make a double batch and often mix a whole bag of coconut flakes in them! I love coconut! It makes 'em chewy!😊😊
